Binaural beats are unique sounds recorded in such a way that they adjust the brain wave frequencies of the listener automatically. Through a process that has been named brain entrainment, binaural beats can adjust the mental and physical state of the person listening.
Experiments have shown that there are branwave frequencies, like intense relaxation, are suited to learning and taking in new information while delta brainwave states create relaxed healthy sleep. Until the discovery of binaural beats programs, the only other way to make deliberate changes in your brainwave patterns was through deep meditation. Before now this type of meditation has only been possible for practitioners of meditation with over 20 years of practise, such as Zen Buddhist Monks.
But, by listening to binaural beats it is now possible for all of us to enter all kinds of meditative states in minutes only by using home headphones and a specifically recorded pre-made brain entrainment recording.
Even though the science consists of brain entrainment is highly complex to go into the inherent premise is easy to comprehend. Binaural beats were discovered by Heinrich Wilhelm Dove when he was an Assosiate Professor at the University in Berlin. Prof Dove discovered that when 2 similar sounds, which differ only slightly in frequency, are presented separately to left and right ear (Binaural) they will cause a pulsation or beat type effect to occur in the brain.
In 1973 Scientific American published the research paper by Dr. Gerald Oster called "Auditory Beats in the Brain". This paper showed how Dr. Oster took Prof. Dove's discovery and through research found that by using these binaural beats he could change the brain processes of the listener to match the internal beat created by the binaural beats. When this occurred the brainwaves of the listener would resonate with the same frequency as the binaural beats. Thus Oster discovered that through this technological method he was inabled to change the brainwave frequencies of the listener and generate premeditated brain states.
As far as we are concerned this would just be another scientific experiment that has lno effect on us and our everyday routines were it not for the fact that everything you do in life has a corresponding brainwave pattern. Most times the effects you wish to create rely heavily on the state your brainwaves are in at that moment. The things you do have a dominant frequency associated with each and every one. When you are in a state of deep relaxation when asleep your brain has a specific frequency associated with it with specific patterns such as Theta waves. When you become alert and motivated your brain is engaged in Beta or even Gamma frequency patterns. If you enter a state of focused relaxation such as captivated by TV, imagining or while under the influence of hypnosis, you have entered the Alpha state. This is also the state that is entered into with most forms of meditation. However those experienced in meditation, like Zen Buddhist Monks, are able to enter Theta and Delta states while they remain highly concentrated. These states, unfortunately normally take over 20 years to achieve by pratcising meditation, can be prompted within a very short using binaural beats.
"This all sounds great", you may say but how does it affect me? It is possible to induce meditative states at will using recordings? What does this mean for you and me? In order to answer that question we have to look at the meditation.
